I had no idea that there are so many versions of this song ! Though it should not be much of a surprise as it is one of my favourites.
I absolutely Love LEADBELLY in general, but hearing him, you can understand what inspired all those that followed, to give this song a go.
I think he would have loved the WANDA DAVIS version perhaps? I do have to say though, that each and every cover has its merits. Each one has most definately made it there own, so much so that they almost sound like a different song they all sound so different.
The NIVANA version is another one of my all time favourite songs, also on my personal favourite album’s of theirs, the fabulous NIVANA UNPLUGGED. I have a feeling that they would have liked the last one by LENA HALL. Such pain in every note it’s wonderful.
Plus a version i had not known called BLACK GIRL by LEADBELLY which I think is the first recording.
And IN THE PINES which i believe is an American folk song.
So amazingly this song derives from two songs which is brilliant in itself isn’t it.
Sometimes know as either IN THE PINES, MY GIRL or WHERE DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT. Actually came from the songs, IN THE PINES and THE LONGEST TRAIN.
Sadly the author of neither songs are known, but have been known to date back to Western North Carolina, Eastern Tennessee and Kentuky and North Georgia from at least the 1870’s.
Which blows my mind, but only serves to proove that great songs are great songs and that they will always endure the test of time.
