Our new Chill 1 playlist straight from the Chillout area. Slow sexy little numbers from…
THE HERBALISER, WAX TAYLOR,RODNEY HUNTER and NIGHTMARES ON WAX.. they are all so good, I love them. Some gorgeous voices too.
It reminds me of a lay on the grass in the sun with friends sort of music. Or sitting by the pool on holiday. Or even just getting ready for a night out with friends.
What does this remind you of, or make you feel?
As always with my stuff even if it doesn’t sound like your kind of thing, I would say give it a chance. Hopefully then you will understand why each and every song is there and you never know what you next best most favourite thing is going to be unless you try it.
For me there are only two types of music….
Good and Bad, apart from that anything goes really. No rules and I find it better that way. Why limit yourself?
My only rule if you can call it that-ish, is it has to make me feel. Something, surely ? In the same way that all Art has to move me…. to something.
Or conversely it makes me FEEL like getting up and changing the song. Either/Or 🤣
I had no idea that there are so many versions of this song ! Though it should not be much of a surprise as it is one of my favourites.
I absolutely Love LEADBELLY in general, but hearing him, you can understand what inspired all those that followed, to give this song a go.
I think he would have loved the WANDA DAVIS version perhaps? I do have to say though, that each and every cover has its merits. Each one has most definately made it there own, so much so that they almost sound like a different song they all sound so different.
The NIVANA version is another one of my all time favourite songs, also on my personal favourite album’s of theirs, the fabulous NIVANA UNPLUGGED. I have a feeling that they would have liked the last one by LENA HALL. Such pain in every note it’s wonderful.
Plus a version i had not known called BLACK GIRL by LEADBELLY which I think is the first recording.
And IN THE PINES which i believe is an American folk song.
So amazingly this song derives from two songs which is brilliant in itself isn’t it.
Sometimes know as either IN THE PINES, MY GIRL or WHERE DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT. Actually came from the songs, IN THE PINES and THE LONGEST TRAIN.
Sadly the author of neither songs are known, but have been known to date back to Western North Carolina, Eastern Tennessee and Kentuky and North Georgia from at least the 1870’s.
Which blows my mind, but only serves to proove that great songs are great songs and that they will always endure the test of time.
